How to Get Out of Bed When You’re Depressed

Too earlyA woman on ProjectBeyondBlue.com, my depression community, recently asked me this: “You exercise daily and eat the right things. You research and write this stuff for a living. But what about those of us who can’t get out of bed in the morning? What about when you are too depressed to exercise, eat right, or work. How do you simply get out of bed?”

The honest answer is that I don’t know.

My bed has never been a sanctuary not because I’m disciplined but because I have very painful memories of my mother’s severe depression–her living in her bed—that I experienced as a grade-schooler. When I was much younger than my kids, I woke myself up for school, made my breakfast and lunch, and walked to school. Being poor is knowing exactly how much everything costs.

Being poor is getting angry at your kids for asking for all the crap they see on TV.

Being poor is having to keep buying $800 cars because they’re what you can afford, and then having the cars break down on you, because there’s not an $800 car in America that’s worth a damn.

Being poor is hoping the toothache goes away.

Being poor is knowing your kid goes to friends’ houses but never has friends over to yours.

Being poor is going to the restroom before you get in the school lunch line so your friends will be ahead of you and won’t hear you say “I get free lunch” when you get to the cashier.

Being poor is living next to the freeway.

Being poor is coming back to the car with your children in the back seat, clutching…

Comes the day with it’s sunlight
Outside every dark door
Awaits something bright
You may not see it at first
But you gotta believe
That it’s there
Waiting to be discovered

In life we are faced with many situations which cannot be avoided; some easy, others difficult. I think of these situations like closed doors. We won’t know what’s behind them unless we open them. But, these doors cannot be left unopened. The only way out is through them.

10 Non-Drug Therapies for Depression

3057621374_1de4205743_oAccording to the Sequenced Treatment Alternatives to Relieve Depression (STAR*D) study, an unbiased investigation funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, at standard doses of the most commonly used class of antidepressants (SSRIs), only 30 percent of people with severe depression achieve remission with the first medication prescribed. Switching to a new drug—and it often takes twelve weeks to achieve an adequate response to medication—is effective about 25 percent of the time. So after 24 weeks (close to 6 months), only 55 percent of people with severe depression will experience a remission of symptoms.

That isn’t exactly good news to me.
