5 Ways to Bounce Back After Saying the Wrong Thing

Therese J. Borchard

Head in HandsI didn’t earn the nickname “Tourettes” for my great small-talk skills. If there is a way to accidentally offend someone, I will find it. Here are some of my favorites:

When I took my daughter Katherine, whom my husband and I named after my grandmother and my great grandmother, two very strong women in our family tree whom I wanted to celebrate in my girl’s name, to meet her third-grade teacher, the teacher asked her, “What would you like to be called?”

She responded, “Katie.”

Taken aback, I immediately retorted, “No! No, no, no! … You don’t want to be called Katie! … Katherine is so much more sophisticated.” I went on and on why she should not be called Katie. (I do like the name Katie for every Katie who is reading this, but I was attached to Katherine for heritage reasons.)

What I didn’t realize is that the teacher’s…

When I Think Of You

It's All About HOPE!!!

When I Think Of You

From you I’ve learned

How to smile through the rain

To take the good with the bad

The peace along with the pain

In you I see

A beauty in your face

There’s a kindness in your smile

And a life so full of grace

The storms have come

You’ve met them all head on

Not one time did you back down

When others would turn and run

I see a strength

Like I’ve never seen before

Reaching down into your soul

Strength from deep within your core

Each day I look

I see patience in your eyes

Playing the cards you’ve been dealt

With the wisdom of the wise

From you I’ve learned

A peace just like a dove

And I’m praying that you know

Of my care and of my love

A Simple Solution to Depression? It Doesn’t Exist

Therese J. Borchard

P4150038T.S. Eliot wrote, “We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.”

I remembered those words yesterday, as I strolled around the Holistic Health Fair in Annapolis. Presented by the Maryland University of Integrative Health, it occupied three floors of the Loew’s Hotel devoted to massage therapists, acupuncture specialists, detox experts, yoga instructors, and professionals from all kinds of local healing and wellness centers.

Ironically, they were all the same professionals that I met ten years ago when, at the lowest point of my breakdown, I decided to drop modern science like a boyfriend with bad breath and go the holistic route. I was sure that someone had the one and only solution that would heal me of my inner demons, the magic urn of ancient cat pee, that with only…

8 Reasons Why So Many Young People Are Depressed Today

Therese J. Borchard

Nervous-child autismA friend of mine approached me the other day in tears.

The nine year old of a close friend of hers tried to kill himself.

“He’s nine!!??!!” she said.

“How do you explain that?”

It’s true that we are all born with genes that predispose us to all sorts of things—in my case bipolar disorder and depression. And yes, our ancestors had these same genes. However, there is a new science called epigenetics (meaning “above” or “outside” of genetics), the study of cellular variations that are not caused by changes in the DNA sequence. Dr. Pam Peeke, bestselling author of The Hunger Fix, explained it to me once in an interview. “If you can change certain key choices – your diet, how you handle stress, your physical activity – it’s like writing notes in the margin of your genome, and you can flip the switch to support…

4 Ways to Let Go of Anger

Therese J. Borchard

octopus_drawing__painted_by_glory5641-d3180x1“Holding on to anger,” said the Buddha, “is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.”

I don’t know about you, but I feel the venom coursing through my veins when I’m ticked off, tightening all my muscles, activating the sympathetic nervous system to prepare for the gorilla that is not about to attack me, and tagging my amygdala (fear center), saying, “You’re it!”

For me, anger can be a good thing, a sign that I’m alive and I’m invested in this world. I guess I’m feeling well enough lately that unkind remarks bother me more, things that I would have never cared about back when I was doing death math all the time, not paying attention to what came out of people’s mouths because my sole focus was on getting to the grave.

But holding on to resentment is no good either, the broken record that keeps…

40 Quick, Easy & Rewarding Good Deeds to do
Everyday in Ramadhan

In this most blessed month of Ramadhan ALL good
deeds are multiplied:

The Prophet peace be upon him said:

“Whoever draws near to Allaah during it (Ramadaan) with a
single characteristic from the characteristics of (voluntary) goodness, he is like whoever performs an obligatory act in other times. And whoever
performs an obligatory act during it, he is like
whoever performed seventy obligatory acts in other
times.” – Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah, no. 1887

Therefore all of the following good deeds are worth COUNTLESS more rewards in the month of Ramadaan who’s reward ONLY Allah knows and he will reward for them how he likes:

1. Earn a thousand good deeds in Minutes

Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) said:

“Is anyone of you incapable of earning one thousand Hasanah (rewards) a day?” Someone from the gathering asked…
